Observed water and light limitation across global ecosystems

چکیده

Abstract. With a changing climate, it is becoming increasingly critical to understand vegetation responses limiting environmental factors. Here, we investigate the spatial and temporal patterns of light water limitation on photosynthesis using an observational framework. Our study unique in characterizing nonlinear relationships between light, acknowledging approximately two regime behaviours (no varying degrees limitation). It also framework instead model-derived properties. We combine data from three different satellite sensors, i.e., sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI), surface soil moisture Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) microwave radiometer, greenness Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). find both single-regime two-regime models describe SIF sensitivity photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) across globe. The distribution strength are mapped water-limited environments, while PAR limitations energy-limited environments. Pattern and control of biomass allocation across global forest ecosystems

The underground part of a tree is an important carbon sink in forest ecosystems. Understanding biomass allocation between the below- and aboveground parts (root:shoot ratios) is necessary for estimation of the underground biomass and carbon pool. Nevertheless, large-scale biomass allocation patterns and their control mechanisms are not well identified. In this study, a large database of global ...

Contrasting responses of water use efficiency to drought across global terrestrial ecosystems

Drought is an intermittent disturbance of the water cycle that profoundly affects the terrestrial carbon cycle. However, the response of the coupled water and carbon cycles to drought and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here we provide the first global synthesis of the drought effect on ecosystem water use efficiency (WUE = gross primary production (GPP)/evapotranspiration (ET)). Usin...

Global analysis of nitrogen and phosphorus limitation of primary producers in freshwater, marine and terrestrial ecosystems.

The cycles of the key nutrient elements nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) have been massively altered by anthropogenic activities. Thus, it is essential to understand how photosynthetic production across diverse ecosystems is, or is not, limited by N and P. Via a large-scale meta-analysis of experimental enrichments, we show that P limitation is equally strong across these major habitats and that...

Understanding moisture stress on light use efficiency across terrestrial ecosystems based on global flux and remote-sensing data

Light use efficiency (LUE) is a key biophysical parameter characterizing the ability of plants to convert absorbed light to carbohydrate. However, the environmental regulations on LUE, especially moisture stress, are poorly understood, leading to large uncertainties in primary productivity estimated by LUE models. The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of moisture stress on L...

The Global Activity Limitation Index measured function and disability similarly across European countries.

OBJECTIVE This work aims to validate and increase understanding of the Global Activity Limitation Index (GALI), an activity limitation measure from which the new structural indicator Healthy Life Years is generated. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING Data from the Survey of Health and Retirement in Europe, covering 11 European countries and 27,340 individuals older than 50 years, was used to investigat...
